How to Create a Clipping Mask in Photoshop 2022 [Video Guide]

What is a Clipping Mask?

A clipping mask may be a group of layers to which a mask is applied. Rock bottom layer, or base layer, defines the visible boundaries of the whole group. For instance, if you’ve got a shape within the base layer, a photograph within the layer above it, and text within the topmost layerIf the image and text appear only through the form outline within the base layer, they also combat the bottom layer’s opacity.

Create clipping mask Photoshop

You can group only successive layers. The name of the bottom layer within the group is underlined, and so the thumbnails for the overlying layers are indented. Additionally, the overlying layers display the clipping path icon.
Note: you’ll link the layers during a clipping path so that they move together. The shape within the bottom layer of the clipping path service determines the photo layer’s area above shows.

Do one among the following:

  • Hold down Alt (Option in Mac OS), position the pointer over the line dividing two layers within the Layers panel (the pointer changes to two overlapping circles), then click.
  • In the Layers panel, select the highest layer of a pair of layers you would like to group, and choose layer> Create Clipping Mask photoshop.
When making a clipping path from an existing layer and one you’re close to creating, select the Layers panel’s current layer. Then choose New Layer from the Layer menu or the Layers panel More menu. Within the New Layer dialogue box, select Use Previous Layer to make Clipping Masks, and click on OK.
The clipping mask layers have the opacity and mode attributes of the bottommost base layer within the group.
Note: to vary the clipping mask’s stacking order relative to other layers within the image, select all layers within the group. Then drag the group’s base layer up or down within the Layers panel. (Dragging a layer without selecting all the layers within the group removes that layer from the group.)

Ungrouping the bottom layer from the layer above it ungroups all layers within the clipping mask in photoshop.

Do one among the following:

  • Hold down the Alt option, position the pointer over the road separating two grouped layers within the Layers panel, and click.
  • In the Layers panel, select a layer within the clipping masks and select layer> Release Clipping Mask photoshop. This command cut out the selected layer and any layers above it from the clipping masks.
  • In the Layers panel, select any layer within the group except the bottom layer. Either drag the layer below the bottom layer or pull it between two ungrouped layers within the image.

Release clipping masks

  • In the Layers panel, select any layer aside from the bottom layer within the clipping mask in photoshop.
  • Choose layer> Release Clipping Mask photoshop.
